The Disney game that was a hit for a while is no longer the biggest game on your shelf, according to a new study.
A new study published in the journal PLOS One found that the popular Disney animated film, Beauty and the Beast, was the most popular game in the United States from 2001 to 2014.
While the title was in the top five, it wasn’t a top 10 seller, with only a third of all toys and accessories being sold there, the researchers found.
“It’s not the highest grossing Disney movie of all time, but it is still pretty high in popularity, and that’s important,” said study author and Disney game expert Michael Eisner.
Disney Princesses, Mickey Mouse and Goofy have also been seen in the US since the early 1990s, with the latter two making an appearance in the movie.
“I think the most important thing to understand about the Disney franchise is that it’s a long-term business, it has to be sustained,” Eisner told Al Jazeera.
“That means that the longer the franchise, the more it’s going to be around, and the more popular it’s likely to be, and therefore the higher it is likely to continue to grow.”
In 2014, Disney released the Disney Princesses and Mickey Mouse spin-offs for the iPhone and iPad.
The new game is based on the films and was released to coincide with the 25th anniversary of the movie, which has been a huge hit since its release in December 2017.
Eisner said that as the game continues to be played, more and more of its sales have shifted to smartphones, tablets and smart devices.
“The Disney game has always been a really big success for the company, but the trend is increasingly becoming more and less the Disney game,” he said.
“That’s just a trend, and as you get older, you start to see that the trend starts to wane.”
